From April to June 2012, Shakespeare’s Globe brought theatre companies from around the world to perform all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays in 37 languages. The Globe to Globe season was part of the World Shakespeare Festival for the London 2012 Festival.

THE COMPANY

Grupo Galpao was founded in 1987 and is based in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte. It has roots in street theatre and makes major reference to Brazilian work and adapting major foreign plays adding Brazilian themes, including carnival. It is also keen to experiment and has toured extensively around the world.

THE PLAY

In defiance of the hatred between their long-feuding families, Romeo and Juliet fall instantly in love. To escape their parents’ anger they decide to elope, but, when a message is left undelivered, tragedy strikes, uniting both families in woe. Grupo Galpao bring carnival, music and a light-hearted touch to their interpretation.
