The Space streamed Alfred Hitchcock’s The Ring, with live music from the Soweto Kinch Band – from the Hackney Empire in London.

Hitchcock’s love-triangle melodrama is one of his most admired silent films, following boxer Jack from his humble fairground roots to the Albert Hall, and an epic fight with his Australian love-rival, Bob. Filmed in 1927, The Ring brings into sharp focus society’s changing social attitudes, especially around race. It includes some imagery and language which would be unacceptable for today’s cinema-going audiences, but the norm for its time. Presented with the world premiere of a jazz score by Soweto Kinch, performed live by the Soweto Kinch Band.

Principal restoration funding provided by The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and The Film Foundation. Additional funding provided by The Mohamed S. Farsi Foundation.

The Space has specially commissioned a series of films about Hitchcock’s early work, Hitchcock at the Picture Palace and Seeds of Genius: Hitchcock’s The Pleasure Garden.
