HENRY VIII – ENRIQUE VIII
Performed in Spanish by Rakata (Fundacion Siglo de Oro)
(with subtitles in English)
The Madrid theatre company was founded in 2003 and produces classical works, particularly those of the Spanish Golden Age of the 15th-17th centuries, which it considers to be the country’s richest literary period. Their production of Henry VIII is seen through this Spanish perspective.
King Henry VIII, convinced that his marriage to Katherine of Aragon is unlawful, seeks permission from Rome for a divorce. In spite of the scheming of Cardinal Wolsey, King Henry decides to marry Anne Boleyn. As the King grows closer to his other advisors and Wolsey’s underhand deeds come to light, the Cardinal falls from favour. A new chapter in Britain’s religious history begins.
