The New Radiophonic Workshop
Secret sound of spores
The trail-blazing Radiophonic Workshop was best known for creating the Doctor Who theme out of electronic sounds, and over 40 years composed innovative soundworlds for BBC radio and television. It has been reborn as the New Radiophonic Workshop, and its first project is to make the Sound of The Space.
The seven-strong sound artists who make up the New Radiophonic Workshop includes Yann Seznec, who has created many real-time interactive musical installations, including The Secret Sounds of Spores, revealed in this film.
Working with mycologist Patrick Hickey, Seznec made spores from mushrooms visible by shining a laser on them. Music was created by reacting to the movements of the spores, and was displayed in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Amsterdam.
