In tribute to actress Sophiya Haque, who died in January 2013, this is a behind the scenes documentary about the making of the new British Bollywood stage musical Wah! Wah! Girls in which she starred. The musical opened at Sadler’s Wells Peacock Theatre, before moving to the Theatre Royal Stratford East and later to the Hall for Cornwall in Autumn 2012.

Inspired by the world of Mujra dancers, who for generations have entertained the rich and powerful with a spellbinding mix of dance and song, Wah! Wah! Girls tells a passionate and playful story of love against the odds. Set against the vibrant background of the East End in 2012, these unstoppable girls uncover deep secrets and create unexpected dreams.

The film features interviews with Sophiya Haque, along with writer Tanika Gupta, composer Niraj Chag, director Emma Rice, designer Keith Khan and choreographer Javed Sanadi as well as the cast, and follows the rehearsal process from its earliest days to the opening night.

Sita Oh Sita, a song from the musical has been re-recorded and turned into a filmed Bollywood dance routine, made on location in Petticoat Lane market, London. Watch it here.
