“What you see now with this restored version of The Pleasure Garden is a film that is far more compelling, far more narratively cohesive, and so much more engaging, which really does show off Hitchcock’s talent to a far greater extent than in the past.”

Not only has the digital clean-up and reintroduction of the film’s original tints and tones dramatically improved the look of The Pleasure Garden, but the discovery of new material from other prints in archives around the world has altered our understanding of it.

With the help of the restoration team from the BFI National Archive this video tells the unique story of how Hitchcock’s first film has been restored to its former glory, almost a century after it was made.
