The London Requiem
Premiere
You are watching the very first performance of The London Requiem, composed by Benjamin Till, which was streamed live from Abney Park Cemetery in North London in September 2012.
The music was written largely in graveyards and cemeteries around London and is inspired by quotations found on memorials there. It takes the traditional Latin text as its basis and augments it with quotations found on the gravestones.
The piece comprises of 10 different movements, which have been showcased on The Space and can be watched here.
The music was performed by The Rebel Chorus, The Tamesis Quartet and Matt Whittington on percussion. It was conducted by Samuel Becker, and also featured an orchestral backing track, mixed and produced by Paul Kendall. Alongside the musicians, visual artist Gina Southgate provided her response to the work.
The London Requiem is presented by Rich Mix, an arts centre in East London. It is Rich Mix’s first venture into classical music. You can leave your comments about the London Requiem on their Facebook page or follow @London_Requiem on Twitter.
