Zatopek! by Emily Howard
New Music 20×12 brought together a fascinating line-up of composers, performers and organisations to put new music at the heart of the Cultural Olympiad and is an exhilarating snapshot of new music which took place across the UK through 2012, and at the Southbank Centre on one weekend in July. 20 commissions, each 12 minutes long, inspired by the dynamism of sport and the passion of human endeavour – a once in a lifetime opportunity to create a musical work contributing to a global celebration.
Second Movement, in partnership with Liverpool Philharmonic, commissioned composer Emily Howard to write Zatopek!, a short opera inspired by Czech Olympian Emil Zatopek. Libretto was written by Selma Dimitrijevic. Special thanks to Jerwood Charitable Foundation for making this New Music 20×12 commission possible.
